Ways to get through hard times with God
There is so much grief and pain in this world. Everyone will experience some sort of grief and pain at some point in their lives. Maybe it’s a miscarriage or a broken relationship or the loss of a loved one or of dreams unfulfilled or maybe it’s fear and anxiety that consumes us on a daily basis. Jesus tells us that “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)
The word of God has always been a calming and reassuring thing to read when I’m going through a hard time. But what are some other practical ways we can get through these tough times with God?
Ways to Get through Hard Times with God
God tells us to “pray continually” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV) So pray and ask God for comfort and love. Pray that He would send you people who have been through what you are going through so they can encourage you and show you that you are not alone. Community is everything. One day God may use this difficult time for you to reach out and comfort others.
Trust in God’s goodness and plan, even when it doesn’t make sense. Most times it will not make sense but we have to put our trust in Him through it all. Meditate on this scripture “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Go write that verse on a post-it and put it next to your bed, or write it out on a cute chalkboard sign for your house or get yourself to Hobby Lobby and buy a cute decor piece with that verse on it (when it’s 50% off though!) There is so much we may never understand on this side of heaven, but if we can trust that God is good all the time, that can help comfort us during the most difficult of times.
- Seek God
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7 (NIV)
Sometimes the last thing we want to do when we are hurting and in pain is seek God. In fact, we might be so angry with God that He allowed this thing to happen to us that we can’t bring ourselves to go to Him.
Anger is a part of grief. God created you to have emotions, so let yourself feel them. Allow yourself to let those emotions come out, God can handle it. But then, after you have worked through them, talk to God, write in your journal about what you are feeling, listen to encouraging music and cry out to Him. One thing I try to do is ask God to help me look for the blessings in the situation. If you look for them, there are always blessings amongst your pain. We may not see them right away, but if we ask God he will reveal them to us.
There are so many scriptures in the bible about Hope. God knew that we would all face challenging times in this world, therefore, I believe He wanted to arm us with words of hope to help us through. Friends, even during the darkest of days, we have to remain hopeful for the future. As the saying goes, If God brought you to it, He’ll bring you through it. And He will bring you through it stronger than you were before. I have seen this in my own life, as well in the lives of those around me. If we can just cling to that hope of the future that God promises us, it will definitely be a comfort to us.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
